In this post, you will learn about uncommon healthy habits when working from home.
What they are and how to incorporate them into your life.
So, here you won’t see healthy habits like drinking water, stretching, or setting a schedule.
Don’t get me wrong, these are also important.
But it would not be new information for you, and since you click on this title, that’s what you want.
You may not have considered many of the habits that you will see here.
And that’s exciting!
Since you haven’t heard of them before, it will take you some time to commit to them at first.
But I can assure you that they will help you be more productive while keeping your body and mind healthy.
Does this sound like a challenge to you?
It was for me, at some point, and if you are reading this post, it is because it is for you too.
It can be difficult, but it is possible!
When you work from home, you can be productive and healthy at the same time
Let’s see what your routine looks like when you work at home:
Every day, you do your best to take care of your partner, your family, and your house in general.
At the same time, you manage to attend meetings, solve problems and finish projects at work.
And at the end of the day, you’re tired, so you go to sleep to wake up the next day and do it all over again.
But you know what? You often forget the most important person…
You!
Lately, it seems that you are at the bottom of the list of your priorities.
But, the time has come to change this situation.
Why?
Because you are in this world to create, grow, experience, and live your life.
And guess what?
You can’t do any of that if you’re not healthy.
Your body and mind need your attention now!
In my two-year experience working from home, I have found ways to be productive and healthy at the same time.
So here you will learn the best healthy habits when working from home.
And you will also learn how to incorporate them into your life.
Let’s dive into it!
Healthy Work Habit #1 Declutter your mind
Has it happened to you that when you have many documents, videos, or photos on your phone, it becomes slower?
Well, the same thing happens to your brain when your mind is full of thoughts.
The problem is that some of them are productive, but many more are unproductive.
Things like worries, fears, judgments, and regrets cause your brain to malfunction.
That’s why many times you find yourself trying to finish a project, but your mind doesn’t react as you’d like.
As you have learned to clean your house, you must also learn to clean your brain of things that no longer serve you.
Let’s see how you can incorporate the first out of four healthy habits when working from home.
How can you apply this healthy habit when working from home?
To create space in your brain to function well, there are various techniques you can use.
Yet, I have found two that have worked quite well for me.
They also do not need a lot of time, money, or resources in general.
Which makes them perfect for creating good habits while working from home.
I understand if you can’t include both in your routine, but at least try one of them:
- Journaling
Both activities will help you to free your mind, but also to begin to control it.
Once you control your mind, you can choose which thoughts you want to put inside.
To meditate, I like to use apps like Calm, Medito, or Serenity.
I have been using Medito because you can select the voice of the guide and the background music.
And I love that.
As for journaling, I don’t do it every day, but I try to do it at least once a week.
I also like to keep it simple, so I use a notebook where I write down all the thoughts I have at the moment.
If you are a more creative person, I recommend you to get inspiration online to design the journal the way you want.
If you try any of these activities daily (be consistent!), you’ll start to see results in a week or so.
Your mind will expand and not get caught up in old negative thoughts.
It will be an incredible experience.
Healthy Work Habit #2 Give your eyes a break
It is very easy to create bad habits when you work from home.
Now, it is inevitable to spend long hours looking at the screens of technological devices.
You used to interact with co-workers or clients in person, but now you have to use computers or phones to do so.
And as if that weren’t enough, at night, you also spend a few hours watching your favorite show on television.
All day you make your eyes work non-stop, and then you wonder why you have migraines or why you have blurred vision.
In the end, this not only affects your productivity but also your health.
The only solution is to learn to rest your eyes.
A while ago, I found a simple strategy you can use to develop the second of this list of healthy habits when working from home.
I have been doing it for several weeks and I have noticed that my eyes and forehead are not as tight as they used to be.
How can you apply this healthy habit when working from home?
The American Optometric Association created the 20-20-20 rule.
What they suggest is taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look 20 feet (6.1 meters) away.
It doesn’t matter where you look, but it’s important to avoid screens.
For example, you can look out the window or across the room you are in.
If you want this activity to become a new habit, you must do it every day.
And the easiest way to remember to do this is to set an alarm.
Every time the alarm goes off, put your electronic devices aside and practice the 20-20-20 rule.
This will only work if you are consistent, so do your best to do it every day and restore your eye health.
With this formula, you will create new healthy habits when working from home.
Healthy Work Habit #3 Take short breaks to exist.
When you work from home, a healthy habit to adopt is to take a break from everything, including yourself.
Yes, yourself.
Find a way to help your mind release any thoughts and tensions that it has been holding on to.
It can be difficult to assimilate, but rest is essential for the body and the mind.
And you need both to work well to be productive and healthy.
“Life is a balance between rest and movement.”—Rajneesh
Remember that if you want to take care of others and everything around you, you must be healthy.
Several months ago, I found an easy way to incorporate rest into my routine.
It’s a micro-habit, which means it’s simple, doesn’t take time or money to do.
That will leave you with no excuses to do it every day of your life.
So if you’re having a hard time resting, this easy healthy habit will help you when you are at home.
Here is how you can incorporate the third out of four healthy habits when working from home.
How can you apply this healthy habit when working from home?
Schedule a break of 5 minutes every day and during that time do nothing.
Yes, you read that right… during that time do NOTHING.
This is the process:
First, sit or lie down and let your mind free for 5 minutes (you can close your eyes if you want).
Do not judge the thoughts that come to your mind: let them float.
Second, create a blank canvas in your mind.
Slowly get your thoughts out until your mind is completely blank, and keep it that way for the rest of the time.
For this exercise to work, you must promise yourself that during those 5 minutes you will only exist.
That means putting any worries, regrets, judgments, and fears out of your mind.
It would be difficult at first, but once you practice every day, it will get easier.
So one thing I encourage you to do is add it to your calendar, so you don’t forget to do it every day at the same time.
Remember that when you want to create a habit, you have to commit to it every day.
That way your body learns to do it without thinking about it.
Keep that in mind to incorporate all these healthy habits when working from home.
Healthy Work Habit #4 Keep good posture
Living in a world full of technology has brought many positive things to our lives.
We can do amazing things.
But this era of technology has also brought us a negative thing, and that is a sedentary lifestyle.
Think for a moment, how many hours do you spend sitting?
Not only while working from home, but also on the couch while watching TV or in your car while running some errands.
It’s too much sitting, but that’s the beginning of a much bigger problem.
Not only is the time you spend sitting affecting you, but also the way you sit.
Like many other things in your life, poor sitting posture is the result of bad habits you’ve developed.
The first sign of poor posture is pain in the back, neck, or shoulders.
Throughout the day, you are pushing your body into positions that are not natural to it.
It has become a habit, so you are not aware of it.
Let’s see this in real life.
Without moving, check your posture right now.
Is your head in line with your spine? Are your shoulders straight and away from your ears?
If you answered no to these questions, your posture isn’t good enough.
The good news is that you can fix it by tweaking a few things.
How can you apply this healthy habit when working from home?
Today, there is a lot of information on this subject, especially for people who work from home.
So after searching, I found a video that has helped me to create this new healthy habit when working from home.
There you can see that many times improving posture has to do with improving the way we position our work tools.
You can watch this video every morning before work to make sure everything is in the right place.
But keep in mind that during the day, your body loses its posture.
So what you can do is every time you rest your eyes (20-20-20 rule), you can check your posture.
And you will unlearn something (bad posture) and learn something new (good posture).
Once you repeat the same process over and over again, your body will change the bad habit for a new one.
And over time you will experience a new sense of health.
Not the kind of health you’ve learned to believe is normal, but real health where your body and mind work in harmony.
Conclusion
It’s no secret to anyone that working from home can be challenging.
We all have family and obligations we have to take care of, on top of all the responsibilities at work.
And all that is very important, but the most important person is you!
Your health should come first and don’t get stuck thinking that’s being selfish.
When you take care of yourself first, you create a great balance in your body and mind that allows you to help others.
That’s why it’s so indispensable to create healthy habits when working from home.
You might be thinking, “Oh no, that’s something else I need to take care of.”
And that is why I shared not only a list of healthy habits but also the strategies to apply them when working from home.
That way you don’t have to think about it and follow each of them.
Remember that simple actions become habits with repetition.
At first, you will have to make an effort to build it, but then your body will do it automatically.
You have done the same process thousands of times in your life, without knowing.
So you know how to do it and I am just refreshing your mind.
